First Granny Squares!

20 Mar

Whoa, haven’t posted in a while! Tonight I got way overtired (it’s past 4 in the morning) and made my first granny squares! Pictures and links to the pattern to come in the morning!!

What to do?

4 Mar

Yesterday I went to the thrift store and bought a bag of string for a dollar fifty. There was BEAUTIFUL soft hemp that I’m making into a baby blanket, and also some thinner string that I don’t know what to do with. It’s in a bunch of soft colors, like fresh green, mauve, and sky blue, and I’m in love with it, but it’s not exactly soft. What do you guys think?

My new bag, Joann’s purchases, and my first donation!

My new bag, Joann's purchases, and my first donation!

This is what I made today! It took me about nine hours. I’m making my boyfriend a hat that looks like a cooked turkey (which, in the future, will match the bacon scarf and steak mittens I am also gonna make him). While at school, I finished the actual hat part, but did not have the right tools to make the drumsticks I’m gonna attach on top, so I made myself a “man purse.” It’s actually more like a crocheted backpack. It’s been floating around in my head for quite a while and I finally did it. It’s nothing fancy, but it came out quite well.

My friend, who sees how incessantly I crochet, gave me his Joann’s coupons that he received in the mail, so right now I’m picking out the things I want to buy from them. I live in a teeny tiny town so my local Joann’s has a teeny tiny selection, so I’m probably gonna buy off the internet. I know I need more of this bag yarn to finish the turkey hat and the tails I am planning on making. I’m also gonna get some black Red Heart yarn, because for some reason I don’t have any, and one doesn’t need expensive, nice yarn for stuff like amigurumi detailing and things. I’m also going to get some lighter weight yarn, to make my friend a lacy purple gothic overskirt (have not yet decided on a pattern). But alas, I can only use one coupon per order! So I may very well just buy the purple for now.

Also, since it’s the end of the month, I made my first donation to the National Center for Transgender Equality! It was only five dollars, but maybe I’ll get more help in the future. This month, in total, I made NINE DOLLARS AND FIFTY FIVE CENTS once I take out expenses. I sold two things, one on Etsy and one to a friend. Makin’ bank!

I decided to whip up something quickly for St. Patrick’s Day, so I got ahold of some bobby pins to make some cute shamrock hair pieces. I was luck-o’-the-Irish enough to have some green yarn sitting around. I used this pattern. If you’re interested in making some for yourself, I recommend that instead of chaining 5 to begin with, chain 3 or 4. I ended up with a HUGE hole in the middle in my first attempt, so unless that’s what you’re going for, you might need to edit a little.

Purple/Blue Crocheted Hat to Benefit Transgender Equality

Purple/Blue Crocheted Hat to Benefit Transgender Equality

To date, this is one of my favorite things that I have crocheted. I bought the yarn to make fingerless gloves for my friend as a Christmas present, and then halfway through the project realized that the yarn was not only purple and aqua, but yellow and denim as well.

Here it’s modeled by my close friend and crochet buddy. She’s way more talented than me, so I’ve been bugging her to get into Etsy too. Ain’t she pretty?

This is another one of those things where if you buy it I’ll donate to the National Center for Transgender Equality.

Stash Hat: Pink, Black, Gray and White

Stash Hat: Pink, Black, Gray and White

“To the untrained eye, this may look like a normal beanie. A little colorful, yes. Funky, definitely. But what admirers won’t know is that you are hiding a secret. On the inside of the hat is a built-in pocket, big enough to keep your emergency cash (or stash) safe from both prying fingers and your own human error.”

If you would like to know how I made it, please let me know!
